Dear students,

Thanks so much for being such thoughtful readers and writers and having a healthy discussion on our class blog. I love reading your comments!

We have finally turned the last page of Meet Josefina. This book took us on a journey back in history and showed us life in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1824. I do hope you have enjoyed reading it and learned a lot about the way settlers lived back then and how they influenced traditions and culture in modern day America. Books like this help us understand today's Americans and their life better.

As you are discussing the last chapter "A Peek into the Past", please refer to the content of the entire book as well.

For your final discussion please choose one of the questions below and answer it in a paragraph format (about 10 complete sentences or more). Support your answer with examples from the book where possible. Include five new words and their definitions. Your post is due on April 27.

1. In New Mexico in 1824, several generations of the same family lived in one household. Compare their lifestyle with life in modern day USA. What are the differences? What are the similarities?

2. Abuelito's caravan traveled four or five months to bring goods from Santa Fe to Mexico City. Compare the way people traveled back then and now. Are there more similarities or differences?

3. Josefina's family did their shopping when caravans like Abuelito's arrived in town. Compare the way people shop today and the way they made purchases in Josefina's time. How have things changed?

4. What were the advantages, if any, of Josefina's lifestyle?  Disadvantages? If you could switch places with Josefina, would you like to live on her rancho in 1824? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Your two  comments to your classmates posts are due on May 1. While you are commenting, please do not simply say, "You are right. I agree with you." :-). You want your comments to be meaningful, so please add to your classmates' posts to show why you agree or disagree.

Happy blogging!

Your devoted reader Natalia
